Informatics Program and Cognates
- Define informatics, a surprisingly good definition from askdefine.com.
- A much narrower definition from a Center for Clinical and Translational Science, wanting to distance itself from things that they consider
not informatics.
The [IU] School of Informatics was the first school of its kind—an innovative, interdisciplinary program where technology fuels discoveries in fields ranging from music to microbiology.
About: School of Informatics and Computing: Indiana University Bloomington
Informatics
is so frequently compounded (bio-informatics, cheminformatics, health informatics, etc.) that the term is hardly recognized by itself. We hope to change that!
- Degree requirements
- General education
- Core
- 6 common courses
- 2 informatics electives
- 1-2 (6 hrs.) capstone course or sequence
- Cognate: area of application.
The Cognates
A cognate is similar to a concentration, except it requires courses that are usually taken outside the major. In that respect, it’s like a minor; but unlike a minor, a cognate (one or more) is required for the informatics major.

- Second, the marketing cognate introduces students to the fast‐evolving field of marketing technology. Through experiential cases and real‐world projects, students will use technology to make marketing decisions, to solve marketing problems, to execute marketing tactics, and to evaluate marketing programs.
- Finally, all cognate students will compete in at least one of two national competitions that utilize marketing technology.
Outcomes. Upon completing this cognate, students will:

- Be able to converse with small business owners & marketing professionals
- Understand common marketing goals, identify marketing challenges, and use technology to solve marketing problems
- Use technology for tactical marketing & program evaluation
- Identify the steps in the consumer decision process (how consumers search, evaluate, try, buy, consume, and/or dispose) & apply the process to a marketing problem
Requirements: 15 credit hours in BUS classes:
- An introductory marketing class: M301 or M300
- An upper‐division class in consumer behavior:
M405 Consumer Behavior
- A project‐based class in marketing technology, choose one:
- BUS‐M432 Digital Marketing [new course, course to be project based and be part of national competition]
- BUS‐M415 Promotion Management [course to include a cross‐channel IMC campaign; course to be project based and be part of a national competition]
Two elective classes, chosen from: Any BUS‐M class numbered 302 to 479
May choose 3 credits from BUS‐M480 Professional Practice in Marketing (P: Permission), BUS‐K312 Decision Modeling (P: ECON‐E270), BUS‐W408 Small Business Practicum (P: Permission)
Marketing cognate students who wish to be best prepared in marketing technology are advised to complete ECON‐E270 (or equivalent) and these four electives – M346, M415, M432 & K312. Students who wish to be best prepared for industry are advised to complete BUS‐M301 and M303, plus elective coursework in Accounting.
This cognate pairs well with the analytics cognate.
The health informatics cognate will prepare students for a career in the health information field.
